Watkins and his research team won the IgNobel Prize in 2019 Prizes), the team’s research found that in places where the gap between rich and poor is more severe and income inequality is greater, people kiss their partners mouth-to-mouth more frequently.
The nine award-winning researchers come from Scotland, Poland, France, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Australia and Italy. Focusing on "mouth-to-mouth kissing", everyone worked together to develop this cross-cultural research project.
Compared with researchers, what is more important in cross-cultural research is of course the research objects in different regions. The study had a total of 2,300 participants from 13 countries. In addition to the countries mentioned above, it also included the Czech Republic, Germany, Nigeria, India, and the United States. The research subjects are scattered across six continents and have diverse cultural and life backgrounds.
"Our data shows that when people are in an environment that provides fewer safeguards, they kiss more." And people will pay more attention to kissing in the stable later stages of a relationship than at the beginning of the relationship.
Researchers believe that kissing can be used as a signal to show the commitment people make in an intimate relationship when they are in love, helping to maintain a long-term and stable partnership. Therefore, kissing may have a higher value in areas where income inequality and competition for resources may be greater.
Through this project centered on "kissing", researchers also found that whether a kiss is good or not in love depends on the skills. Important, but the key still depends on sensory factors, such as whether body odor and oral taste are pleasant. In other words, at least there must be no body odor or bad breath. Compared with men, women pay more attention to whether the other person's breath is fresh when judging whether a kiss is good or not.
The Spouse Evaluation Hypothesis believes that when people kiss, they are actually evaluating their romantic partners at close range through various clues. There are also studies showing that the higher the frequency and satisfaction of kissing, the better the quality of the intimate relationship.
